Soundproofing ratings are typically measured in decibels (dB), indicating how well a material reduces sound. The decibel scale is logarithmic, so a 10 dB increase represents a tenfold increase in sound intensity. For instance, a reduction from 50 dB to 40 dB means the sound is perceived as half as loud. Understanding these ratings helps in selecting materials that effectively minimise noise transmission. For a more detailed explanation, you can refer to our blog post: Decibels Explained: Understanding Soundproofing Ratings.

Before using Karma SoundLay 9mm with an engineered timber floating floor you should consider the thickness of the flooring that is being laid. We always recommend a stiffening layer is added to flooring with a thickness of less than 15mm.

If you’re looking to block airborne sound then Karma SoundLay Plus 12mm is a good option. When it comes to SoundLay, we recommend a stiffening layer when putting wooden floors over the top, specifically if the flooring is less than 15mm thick. The SoundLay has a substantial foam layer, so we expect that (within reason) it can accommodate uneven floors.

Yes, you can use the Green DPM 1200 Gauge under Kingspan for the floor base.

Yes. You can lay carpet directly over Karma SoundLay – it can be used with or without carpet underlay. We also offer Karma Gripper Strips which are designed to sit under the carpet gripper strip to reduce transmission through them.

Yes, this heavy duty foil underlay is suitable for use with wood flooring.

The TimberTech2 Acoustic Plus is not tested within Part E regulations. This does not mean it would fail, simply that it may need to be tested and a certificate provided. Alternatively, we recommend looking at the Regupol 530, which is independently tested under laboratory controlled conditions and onsite using UKAS accredited and ANC approved bodies respectively showing compliance with the new building regulations Approved Document E.

Product Specific Questions

Before using Karma SoundLay 9mm with an engineered timber floating floor you should consider the thickness of the flooring that is being laid. We always recommend a stiffening layer is added to flooring with a thickness of less than 15mm.

If you’re looking to block airborne sound then Karma SoundLay Plus 12mm is a good option. Yes. You can lay carpet directly over Karma SoundLay – it can be used with or without carpet underlay. We also offer Karma Gripper Strips which are designed to sit under the carpet gripper strip to reduce transmission through them.

The Karma Acoustiwall 2 can be used over an existing plastered brick wall, as long as it is ensured that the screws used to fix it are long enough to penetrate the bricks, rather than just the existing plasterboard.

We’d recommend Karma SoundLay, as this is particularly successful in blocking the transfer of this type of sound. Karma SoundLay comes in thicknesses of 9mm, 12mm and 15mm to suit your requirements.

It is not advised to use screws or mechanical fixings of any kind, as any impact that happens over the top, can then transmit through the subfloor underneath.

We recommend using a product such as our Regupol 3912 which is a 5mm impact noise reduction mat. This will help reduce the impact being passed through into the floor below.

Karma SoundLay is not fire resistant.

Regupol Vibration Mat 480 is supplied as a single roll that is 10m long. With the correct equipment, it can be cut into strips.

When fitting Karma SoundLay 9mm with a quicklock floor, you will need to add a stiffening layer of 9mm or 12mm plywood on top of the SoundLay before applying your final floor finish.

Yes, however, we’d suggest using a 9mm tongue and groove plywood over the top of the SoundLay 9mm.
