Frequently asked questions

Do I need a stiffening layer over the Soundlay mat before fitting a floating floor?

Our guidance is to add a stiffening layer, such as 6mm T&G MDF or plywood, when the floor on top is under 15mm thick. Thicker floors, such as a 20mm laminate, should be fine without one, but we always recommend to check your floor manufacturer’s guidance.

Can I use Soundlay under laminate flooring?

Yes, depending upon the thickness. We don't recommend using it for anything less than 15mm thick, ideally 20mm or thicker. Please check the laminate manufacturer's guidance on soft underlays, because some limit what they allow under their boards.

What else do I need to fit Soundlay mats?

You'll want high tack tape for the joints between the mats.

Can I use Soundlay Duo under carpet?

Yes, carpet is listed as a suitable floor type and the product page says it suits all final floor finishes.

Can I fit a kitchen floor over Soundlay on a suspended timber floor?

Soundlay mats are soft, so a kitchen floor on top needs a rigid layer over them to spread the load from appliances and cabinets. For vinyl click floors this means 9mm or 12mm plywood over the mat, while glued-down finishes need tongue-and-groove plywood. Our team can check the build-up and advise on heavy units.

Do you sell plywood for the stiffening layer?

We don't sell plywood, however we do have 6mm MDF Tongue and Groove boards. https://flooringwarehousedirect.co.uk/product/tongue-and-groove-mdf-6mm/

Can I screw or fix the plywood through the Soundlay mat into the joists?

You shouldn't mechanically fix through the Soundlay mats, as the sound and vibrations can travel through them, defeating the purpose of the Soundlay.
