The top 5 benefits of soundproofing your home

Airborne noise problems

The rising cost of living and the shift to home working has us spending more time than ever at home. In many cases, this positive shift has allowed us a better work/life balance, however it has also brought to light different needs, such as a quieter working environment. It can be difficult to decide if you should look to improve your current home or to move.

With the housing market experiencing serious fluctuations in recent years, we decided to focus on what we can control. Soundproofing cannot magically give you more space, but it can help to improve the space that you have in more ways than one…

Improved wellbeing

Long-term exposure to noise can cause a variety of effects on our health and wellbeing. Imagine living next to an airport or above a pub? This noise can cause issues with sleeping patterns, concentration and overall happiness. Recent studies have even shown that unwanted noise exposure can negatively affect your cardiovascular and metabolic systems.

Introducing soundproofing in your home can lead to a more calming environment that can have a positive impact on your blood pressure and help to better regulate your mood. By blocking out unwanted sound, you can experience better sleep and all the benefits that come with it.

A better home working environment

In August 2022, fifty of the UK’s biggest employers said that they had no plans to return all staff to the office full time in the near future. With so many of us now repurposing spare bedrooms, sheds, kitchens, etc., into our home office, the space isn’t quite set up for it.

Transforming a home into a productive work space can be challenging; contending with partners and children also working from home or carrying out daily activities can lead to a lack of concentration and privacy. Introducing soundproofing and sound absorbing acoustics into your home can help you to create a professional environment that works for everyone.

Added insulation

The rising costs of gas and electric have been astronomical throughout the course of 2022. It’s no wonder that many UK residents have been forced to consider alternative ways to heat their homes and cook their meals.

Buying an air fryer certainly won’t help insulate your home, but soundproofing will. The benefits of soundproofing aren’t just about noise reduction – The process uses additional materials to block sound by providing a physical barrier between the soundwaves and your ears. This increase in materials in walls, floors and ceilings provides the dual benefit of stopping heat from escaping and cold from getting in. The way we see it, it’s an added bonus that creates a quieter and more cost effective home; win-win.

Enhanced Privacy

Unless you live alone, establishing your own privacy can be difficult in a home shared with others. Whether you’re a family with children; living with housemates; or a couple, we all need private time and space to focus on ourselves or our work.

Not everyone works to the same schedule, so that could mean that you wake up before the rest of your household and need to be able to start your day without fear of disturbing others. Introducing soundproofing into your home or a specific room can increase your own privacy, as well as reducing the sound transfer between your home and your neighbour’s home.

Increased Property Value

When buying a new home, most of us are looking for an oasis of calm; a place we can truly relax and enjoy our environment. A home that already offers additional soundproofing to block out external noise or maintain top sound quality within a room can have a positive impact on its value.

As we spend more time at home than ever before, soundproofing can offer better internal acoustics for a cinema room, music room or office. When you invest in soundproofing, you will add value to your home and make it more appealing to future buyers, if you choose to sell.

What are the best rooms to soundproof?

Soundproofing a room in your home is a time and cost investment that deserves consideration. It is personal to you and has no one size fits all approach. We’d always recommend soundproofing the rooms where you will gain the most, but we often find this to be areas of entertainment (such as living room, home cinema room, home recording studio etc.), a home office, or laundry/utility room. If you live in shared accommodation and are struggling with noise from neighbours, it may be the adjoining walls or floors that would benefit from soundproofing.

Our expert team are always more than happy to talk through your noise issues and offer you an effective solution that will work for your budget.

What does soundproofing involve?

The type of materials that you need will depend on the type of noise you are experiencing (read our blog what is soundproofing?) and whether you need to soundproof a wall, floor or ceiling. You may need one or more of the three solutions below:

  • Increased mass – improving the mass in your space can help to block noise. For example, by increasing the thickness of a wall using additional building materials, you reduce the ability for noise vibrations to pass through the structure. This will work to reduce impact and airborne noise.
  • Decoupling – this is the process of separating two parts of a wall by adding space or framing between them and therefore blocking sound and loud noises from travelling through.
  • Sound absorption – soft surfaces help to absorb sound and minimise reverberation and echo in a room. This is why you might often notice a difference in sound in a room that has a hard floor and a room that has carpet.

Everyday items such as sofas, cushions and other soft furnishings can help to control noise inside a room, but you can also bring in additional materials that have sound absorbing qualities. We even offer a stylish approach to sound absorption with our wooden slat panels that are easy to fit and effectively control the acoustics in your home.
